Seeking Elusive JOY

By definition, Joy is “the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying (dictionary.com).  Joy is such a contrast to suffering and hard times, we naturally will do all we can to experience more joy and make great effort to avoid pain and suffering.  Throughout history, the quest for joy has been central to human endeavors, and in the twenty-first century it has become an obsession.  Perhaps this is why the self-help section of any bookstore is one of the largest.  The Internet and social media outlets are flooded with articles, blogs, news stories, and self-help tips all with aims of helping us find and experience more joy. Solutions range from medical ideas, natural remedies, stress management tools and thousands of ideas, that can all be found in seconds with a quick Google search.  As natural and impatient men and women, we constantly seek “quick fixes” and there are literally millions of options.  This information overload, coupled by our capacity to choose from too many options, makes the pursuit of joy even more elusive.  Perhaps, this is one of the adversary’s tactics, actually using our gift of agency as an obstacle in our pursuit of joy.
